Kids Open: A weekend packed with excitement and learning opportunities.

Just like the pros, the Kids Cross also features 2-3 training runs and a timed run with individual starts. This results in a ranking similar to what is seen in alpine skiing. "With the individual start, we aim to alleviate the fear of racing in a group for the kids," says Didi. The following day, there are again several training runs and a so-called "Holistic K.O. format race", where participants start in groups of four, with two being eliminated each time until two remain for the next final run. "With this format, we introduce the young riders to racing together in a heat," explains Didi. The advantage is that the kids become familiar with the track through the individual runs on Saturday and are more willing to race together in a heat.

Youth development and safety

At a kids' or open race like here in St. Moritz, skicross newcomers are at the starting line. "Accordingly, we have to adjust the difficulty of the courses while still ensuring they remain varied and enjoyable for the kids. I think we've managed that quite well on the Public Cross track at Munt da San Murezzan," says "Mr. Skicross". However, safety is paramount for him, meaning not only are the nets in the right place, but also that the features, jumps, and rollers function properly. "We need sections where we can regulate the speed and where position changes are possible, and again, ones that are all about one thing: having a lot of fun!"
